How they can support your growth and success as a leader

Last month we shared what a Leadership Blind Spot is and four ways to discover them as a leader.

This month we are focusing on the first discovery: Working with an Accountability Partner.

Why it matters

Working with an accountability partner is important because it significantly increases your chances of following through on your goals and making consistent progress.

An accountability partner offers:

  • A fresh perspective to expand awareness of blind spots.
  • Honest feedback that challenges your assumptions (and excuses).
  • Support that keeps you focused and grounded in reality.

They help you stay committed—not just to your goals, but to the growth required to achieve them.

Leadership Strategy

If you choose the right person—someone who’s reliable, supportive, and willing to challenge you—you can create a structure that makes real change more likely.

Look for someone who is:

  • Reliable – They follow through on commitments.
  • Supportive – Encouraging, but not overly soft.
  • Honest – Will call you out when necessary.
  • Goal-Oriented – Ideally working on similar goals (but not required).
  • Emotionally Mature – Can handle feedback and give it without drama.

Leadership Challenge

Over the next month, find someone to be your accountability partner. Ideally, someone that is not too close (e.g., your partner or best friend) and/or you suspect they won’t challenge you or if emotions might interfere.

Once you determine who this should be, set up a brief conversation to align on:

  • Your goals and theirs.
  • Frequency of check-ins (daily, weekly, biweekly).
  • Preferred format (text, phone call, video, in person).
  • What you expect from each other: reminders, feedback, encouragement, etc.

Keep it structured but simple. Don’t overcomplicate it with elaborate systems right away.
