The idea that incompletes drain our energy is a common theme in coaching, productivity, and psychology. It refers to unfinished tasks, unresolved conversations, unmet commitments, or lingering decisions that continue to occupy mental space even when we’re not actively thinking about them.
Why it Matters
Completing incompletes frees energy were as every unfinished commitment, unresolved conflict, postponed decision, or cluttered space requires a small amount of your attention. Individually these may seem insignificant, but collectively they create mental and emotional drag. By identifying and completing or consciously letting go of these incompletes, you reclaim focus, reduce stress, and create capacity for what matters most.
Leadership Insights
Examples of incompletes include:
- An email you’ve been meaning to send.
- A difficult conversation you’ve been avoiding.
- A bill or form that needs to be completed.
- A project that’s been sitting unfinished.
- A promise you made to yourself or someone else.
- A cluttered workspace you’ve wanted to organize.
- A decision you’ve postponed.
Leadership Strategy
Ways to complete incompletes:
- Make a list of everything that feels unfinished.
- Decide for each item whether to:
- Complete it.
- Schedule it.
- Delegate it.
- Renegotiate the commitment.
- Let it go intentionally.
- Start with the easiest items to build momentum.
- Review your list regularly so new incompletes don’t accumulate.
Leadership Challenge
Take a few minutes each day to reflect and ask yourself:
“What unfinished commitment is quietly consuming my energy today?” and take the steps necessary to “Complete It” and then notice how you feel. Do you feel lighter or a new level of freedom is present.
Often, completing just one or two lingering items creates a noticeable sense of relief and momentum and freedom. The goal isn’t to finish everything immediately, it’s to stop carrying unresolved commitments without a clear decision about them.
