Why does every CEO need to develop the skill at being an Impactful Storyteller?
Because as CEO, you are the Chief Meaning-Maker of your organization. Your role is to support people to understand why your organization exists, where it is going, why customers choose to work with you, and how every employee contributes to creating value. Great CEOs don’t just communicate information, they create understanding, belief and action.
Storytelling isn’t about being theatrical. It’s about creating clarity, conviction and momentum for your employees, current and future clients and your shareholders.
Here are a few examples of CEOs who communicate their organization’s purpose through storytelling:
- Elon Musk (CEO of SpaceX) Explaining the long-term vision behind SpaceX’s mission

- Dani Reiss (CEO of Canada Goose) Sharing why Canada Goose continues to manufacture much of its apparel in Canada and what that says about the company’s values.

- David McKay (CEO of the Royal Bank of Canada) Speaking at World Economic Forum Annual Meeting about leadership, economic growth, and the future of business.

To become a more intentional storyteller, practice telling these six stories:
- Origin Story: Why do we exist?
- Customer Story: Who do we serve, and how do we improve their lives?
- Values Story: What do we stand for, and how do our values shape our decisions?
- Vision Story: Where are we going, and why does it matter?
- Failure Story: What challenge did we overcome, and what did we learn?
- Team Story: What makes our people and culture unique?
Here’s my challenge to you.
Block one hour in your calendar this week and intentionally craft one story from one of these six categories. Then tell that story—to your leadership team, your employees, to a client, or a prospective client. Ask for honest feedback and continue refining it.
The most effective CEOs don’t simply manage strategy.
They tell stories that help people understand it, believe in it, and want to be part of it.
