Holding Paradoxes: The CEO’s Advantage in a World That Won’t Simplify

Executive leadership isn’t about choosing the “right” side of a trade-off. It’s about holding opposing truths at the same time, long enough to see more clearly and to act more intentionally.

A paradox is the coexistence of two seemingly contradictory but equally true realities. In leadership, paradoxes are not problems that can be permanently solved. They are ongoing tensions that must be balanced, navigated, and managed continuously.

Strong CEO judgement comes from the ability to sit inside tension without rushing to resolve it. The goal is not to eliminate paradoxes, but to use them. When held well, they create creative tension, a unique space where better decisions emerge.

Consider just a few of the tensions that define executive judgement:

  1. Short-term performance vs long-term value

Deliver today’s numbers while investing in a future that may not pay off for years.

  1. Confidence vs humility

Set direction with conviction and willing to remain open to being wrong

  1. Speed vs Going Slow

Move fast where it matters and willing to slow down where mistakes are costly. Most organizations get this backwards

  1. Control vs Empowerment

You are accountable for outcomes, and you can’t scale if all decisions depend on you.

  1. High Standards vs Psychological Safety

Demand excellence without creating fear. Innovation dies in environments that optimize for only one.

  1. Stability vs transformation

Run today’s business reliably while reinventing tomorrow’s where both are occurring that the same time, with the same people.

These are not problems to solve. They are tensions to be managed with continuously, with intention.

In every consequential decision, there are competing truths. The question is not “Which side is right?” but:

“What would it look like to be excellent at both?”

Leaders who can hold that question longer, make better decision and will build more successful organizations.
