Building a Culture of Execution Starts with Accountability – Part 3

This month we conclude our three-part series on “Building A Culture of Execution”, by addressing the importance of having intentional follow up conversations to achieving results for your team and organization.

Why It Matters?

Intentional follow-up conversations are a powerful tool for supporting accountability, as they create a structured way to check in, reflect on progress, and reinforce commitments, ultimately benefiting both employees and the organization.

Leadership Strategy

4 Tips to a successful follow up conversation:

  1. Focus on what is missing and not what is wrong:

When you focus on what is missing, it allows us to see obstacles and patterns that prevent someone or a team from accomplishing their commitments. It also both supports progress on the current commitment and allows you to close the gaps on the next project.

  1. Focus on Progress, Not Just Problems:

Celebrate what is going well. This approach reinforces positive behaviors and motivates individuals to stay on track. When discussing obstacles, encourage solution-focused thinking instead of just identifying issues.

  1. Encourage Self-Reflection and Ownership:

Prompt employees to share their perspectives on their progress and any challenges they’re facing. This approach not only empowers them but also helps you better understand their mindset and any support they may need.

  1. Create a Cycle of Accountability:

Schedule the next follow-up at the end of each conversation. Establishing regular follow-up conversations fosters a continuous improvement mindset and keeps goals aligned with daily responsibilities and larger business objectives.

This approach not only helps maintain accountability but also builds a relationship based on mutual respect and support. It’s especially effective when both parties feel empowered and encouraged rather than pressured, leading to better long-term outcomes.
